Common Ground 2011

OPEN SUBMISSION EXHIBITION

Common Ground 2011 ~ Tea Time

Birr Theatre & Arts Centre are planning an open submission exhibition of work by artists living in the Midlands to be held at Birr Theatre & Arts Centre
from December 2011 – January 2012.

This year the subject for Common Ground (referring to a group of artists coming together to exhibit) will be “Tea Time”.

To challenge your creativity, the curator is looking for 50 different versions of Tea Time

The exhibition will be professionally curated and it is intended that the resulting exhibition will showcase the exceptional talent and diversity of Visual Artists
in the Midlands today.

Conditions of entry are as follows:

  • Media: all medium welcome including performance, video work etc.
  • Please deliver two (max.) items of work to Birr Theatre & Arts Centre on Monday 21 and Tuesday 22 November between 1pm and 5pm.
It is advised to submit two pieces to give the curator scope to include as many artists as possible.
  • Pieces that have been exhibited in Birr town previously will not be selected.
  • All work must be professionally presented ready for exhibit. It is not necessary
that works on canvas are framed, but the canvas must be approx 1 inch deep and
not bowed or warped in any way.  Thinner canvases will need to be framed. Works
not presented appropriately will not be considered.
  • Sizes – sizes of work may vary, however artists are reminded to consider the size of the
exhibition space at Birr Theatre & Arts Centre.  Artists are welcome to
visit the space in advance or contact the Theatre who will e-mail a photograph
    of the exhibition space.
  • All items delivered must be clearly marked with name, contact phone number, title, medium and price.
  • A completed Submission Form must be submitted from each artists.  Forms are attached below and will be available at the Theatre at time of submission.
  • Work will not be accepted without a completed Submission Form.
  • All artists should submit a brief biog with their submission.
  • The exhibition will be selected by a professional curator invited by Birr Theatre & Arts Centre and their decision is final.
  • It is likely that no more than 50 pieces will be selected for exhibit, and due to the lack of storage facilities prompt collection of unselected works is expected on or before 29 November between 1pm – 5pm.
  • Artists will be notified if their works have been selected in writing. Selected artists may be asked for digital images of their pieces to be reproduced on the invitation.
  • Birr Theatre & Arts Centre will handle any sales and a 15% commission charge will apply to all sales.
  • Works will only be insured while they are in the building and up to the date artists have been asked to collect them. If you cannot collect or deliver a piece during the dates stated please arrange for someone to assist you.
  • The show will be officially opened on Sunday 4th December and run until the end of January 2012.

‘My Hometown’ ~ Jackie Lynch

Birr artist Jackie Lynch is inviting people to be patrons for her book ‘My Hometown’.

This is a culmination of two years work and will be launched in time for Christmas. Inspired by her stay in Asia and especially the Japanese aesthetic of ‘wabisabisuki ‘which can be loosely translated as ‘patina of old age’ it shows the many aspects of the
beautiful architecture of Birr and especially the many details people often
overlook in their everyday lives.

Five hundred copies of this A4 size hardback book will be printed with ninety two pages of full colour photographs. There will be an introduction by Caimin O Brien and a conclusion by Rosalind Fanning.

To be a patron please send €25 to Jackie Lynch, Wilmer Rd., Birr,  Co. Offaly before the end of September.

You will receive a copy of the book and your name will appear on the patron’s page.

Jackie can be contacted at jlynchcrothustudio@gmail.com
